Karpathos has an area of 301 square kilometers and a coastline of 160 km, the second largest island of the Dodecanese and is located between Rhodes and Crete. The varied landscape alternates with countless churches and chapels and beautiful beaches. It is a popular destination in the Aegean Sea, not least because of the hospitable locals.
According to recent estimates, the current total population counts around 7.000, but more than doubles in the summer months. Not only because of European holidaymakers, but also because of the expatriate locals who spend their holidays home each year. Overall, up to 25.000 people are kept here in the high season.
A serious tourist development on Karpathos began in the early eighties. Especially in the last ten years, the reputation of the island is increased. Naturally, this has a positive effect on the infrastructure and the standard of living on the island.
